Reflective Space

stonefromthesky - Reflective Space
Finally new track is ready. Here you can listen to it:
And, of course, I can't leave you without few comments. How I came up with this? So I was thinking one day: "What will it sound like if I mix sludge/post-metal with idm/glitch?" I couldn't recall somebody who did this before (I mean with fair live/electronic music ratio, not live music with some electronics nobody hear or electronic music with some live instruments that sound also electronic). I wanted to have both together and harmonically mixed. So I decided to try and mess with my  past and present knowledge and experience to get this track done. Well, I quite like what I got in result. While I still have to do some changes I think my music evolves in right direction.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for listening. Get inspired.

PressPausePlay Documentary

Here's, I guess, quite famous documentary called "PressPausePlay". The main plot of it lies in today's pretty easy access to production tools. So everybody can be a musician, photographer, movie director etc. Today we have that level of freedom that many of us were only dreaming 5-10 years ago. To be a musician all you need is a laptop. To be a movie maker or a photographer all you need is DSLR or even iPhone. You don't need thousands and millions dollars to start creating. But is it good or bad? Well, that's what this movie is all about.

What are my thoughts? There are pros and cons as always.

Pros:
  • You can realize your ideas with little money;
  • You can distribute your ideas with ease spreading them on internet and social media;
  • You are free and nobody can limit you except yourself.
Cons:
  • Lots of people don't have guts to educate themselves and to develop necessary skills. That's why there are lots of crappy art nowadays;
  • It's much harder now to stand out from the crowd;
  • Many people get paralyzed by all of the opportunities and freedom.

I feel that this is awesome time. You can express yourself in ways you didn't imagine possible. But if you are serious about being an artist don't be a fool. Educate yourself. If you want to create good music then develop your listening skills, your musical thought, arrangement skills etc. Yes, all you need is a laptop nowadays to make music but this doesn't mean that you can or should. To make good music you need lots of experience and knowledge. Anything is possible but don't make mediocrity to drown in the mediocre noise.

Think. Read. Learn. Get inspired.

P.S. Here are several interviews for a film that I liked:

Here's famous blogger, author of "Permission Marketing" and "Unleashing the Ideavirus" - Seth Godin. I like what this dude has to say. He's not like other people. He has pretty good analysis skills so he always (at least what I saw and read) explains things the way they really are.

I don't know why but I like this girl. She says right things.

I'm a big fan of Apparat. I like his approach to music as well as the whole situation. He's brilliant sound designer as well as artist. Listen to what he has to say.

Here's another great interview. This time it's Sean Parker. Pretty intelligent dude. He has a lot to share.

And the last one is Moby's interview. Very smart guy. I like his approach.

P.P.S. What are your thoughts?

Music and the Psychedelic Mind

Here's an interesting documentary on relation of psychedelic drugs to music. I haven't heard any of those guys but they are telling some thought provoking things.

What are my thoughts? Well, of course, lots of musicians tried drugs. It obvious. But not all of them do their music while actually tripping. I haven't tried LSD or mushrooms, or ecstasy, or heavier stuff, so I can't compare the states. But I know that most of the stuff I tried just lowers my perception instead of improving it. The only exception to this rule is absinthe.When not mixed with any other booze it spreads the boundaries of my perception. But, seriously, I haven't found anything better than laser-like focus of the sober mind. My position on this point today is that you don't need anything to make music. I like to realize in music who I am and my experiences. Besides, when you need drugs or alcohol, or whatever, to make music you become addicted to this thing(s). Why is this not good? Because you destroy your confidence. After deciding not to use drugs you probably won't be able to make music. Well, it's just my opinion.

What are your thought on this?

Rise of the Bedroom Producer

Pretty good documentary on so-called "bedroom" producers. I haven't heard these guys but it was pretty interesting to listen about their life and career. It may be boring for some but definitely interesting for me. I liked the part where this dude with beard told about his work in investment banking and how he dropped it to make music.

I really liked the thought that I share with these guys. True musician makes music not for money at first place. He makes it for the sake of art and self-expression, for the sake of creating something new.

Just watch the video.

What to Listen on SoundCloud?

Here are some cool tracks I've found on SoundCloud recently:

The Haxan Cloak's track is awesome mysterious dark ambient. It's psychodelic and takes you away to the deepest places of your mind.
Insom's track is pretty good neurofunkish stuff.
Windhand is awesome stoner/sludge. So slow and groovy. Awesome.

Post-Dubstep?

Quite interesting video about so-called "post-dubstep" artists and how this genre definition pisses they off. It's really easy to glue "post-" to something. It involves little thinking and can mean really anything. In reality all genres are unnecessary and unimportant. Music is music. There's good music and there's bad music. It doesn't matter whether it's sludge or drum'n'bass, or post-dubstep. The only thing that matters is what artists wanted to say with their pieces. Thinking in terms of genres puts you in closed mind state. True music is created beyond the genre cliches.
